The journey began simply: she needed a clock for her studio. After creating her first few handmade clocks using mechanisms she ordered, they sold out immediately, and she has been dedicating herself to the craft ever since.
Working from her tranquil, rural studio in upstate New York (specifically, Gardiner in the Mid-Hudson Valley), Lacouette infuses her designs with a sense of simplicity and calm. She contrasts this with her youth spent in the bustle of midtown Manhattan, finding peace and beauty in her current work's more intentional, minimalist aesthetic.
Design Philosophy: Form Meets Function
Lacouette’s signature style reconciles seemingly opposite concepts: the strict geometries of Minimalism with a warm, approachable palette and organic feel. Her clocks are crafted from a basic language of circles, squares, and rectangles, resulting in layered compositions that are both dynamic and sophisticated.
She uses a variety of rich materials, including wood, stainless steel, and her highly recognizable, hand-colored copperpatinas.
"I'm a mechanic as well as an artist," she says. "These things need to function, after all."
